The Janet M. Wilson Memorial Chapel facing out over the sea at Ocean Point. It is a picturesque non-denominational chapel. CHAPEL HISTORY Religious services were held in Ocean Point as early as 1899,first in homes and then in the Casino. Worship was led by ministers summering in the area and among these was Rev. Lewis G. Wilson, a Unitarian minister. On August 4, 1917 the Janet M. Wilson Memorial Chapel was dedicated in memory of Lewis Wilson's devoted wife who had died two years earlier. Almost single handedly Mr. Wilson raised the money for it from Ocean Pointers and friends. Among the contributions was a generous one from the American Unitarian Association. The architect was Edwin J. Lewis Jr. Mr. Wilson and other Ocean Pointers joined the hired builders in the toil of erecting the structure and selected the stones which went into special places. Since its dedication, the Chapel has become dear to the hearts of the people who summer in Ocean Point and the region. Children are christened here; young people choose to be married here; and occasionally memorial services are held. It is maintained entirely through the work and monetary generosity of the Ocean Pointers, friends and worshippers. From the beginning the interdenominational character of the Chapel has been maintained with officiating ministers and congregation drawn from many religious fellowships. The services held here during July and August each year offer a welcome to all who wish the opportunity for true devotion and spiritual uplift.
