Looking Forward to the Upcoming Season After a long, and for us
folks along the coast, a surprisingly snowy winter, it is Let’s see what has been going on and what you can look forward to. DECK BECOMES AN ALL-SEASON ROOM Our good friend and web
page designer, David Gudas, told a story one time about a couple who
were sitting on their deck and discussed how it would be great to have a
roof over their deck so that they could get more use out of it. Next,
they decided to install windows and winterize it so they could use it
year round.
Hopefully, Marti and I will not have this same problem as we have discussed at length the advantages of converting our deck to an all season room. It will allow guests to enjoy breakfast, afternoon beverages and desserts, or an evening glasses of wine while enjoying views of Linekin Bay no matter what the weather brings. We’ve been planning this 16’ X 23’ room with our resident contractor, Jim Roberge, who has come up with many great ideas to maximize light and view. He will be starting this project in April and if the weather cooperates our May guests will be enjoying it. We now have a toll free telephone number 800-596-7420. Please make note, as it is new and not listed on our brochures. NEW ADDRESS Don’t worry, we are still at the same location, but with an E-911 system scheduled to go on line this year, we have a number address: 531 Ocean Point Road which replaces HC 65 Box 771. DOWN EAST MAGAZINE The April 2001 issue of Down East features an article titled “The Quiet Side of Boothbay.” Author Elizabeth Peavey points out what we all know,
Many great photos compliment this article, which focuses in on the less explored areas in The Boothbay Region. BOOTHBAY REGION HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Boothbay Region is
rich in history and this is showcased at our historical society located
at 72 Oak St. just across from the time & temperature sign at The
first Bank of Damariscotta. There are seven rooms displaying everything
from a lighthouse light, shipbuilding photos and tools, to photos of
many of the grand old
Open 10-4 Wed., Fri., & Sat. during the summer and 10-2 on Sat. during the rest of the year, the historical society is free. They do offer a wide assortment of books for sale, which detail the history of the area. This year they are holding a raffle for a framed, original oil painting by Alden Stickney of The Steamer Virginia. Larry was recently asked to become a trustee on the board and graciously accepted. Now a somewhat historical question about the Boothbay Region, “What famous musical staring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae was filmed here in the summer of 1955?” Mention the correct answer when you check in this summer and receive an extra homemade dessert. The following is a letter Larry wrote to
Arrington’s B&B Journal, a national publication, which was
included in the Feb. 2001 issue “All Inn A Days Work" My wife and I purchased a home built in 1878 in the mid-coast town of East Boothbay, Maine with the intention of renovating it and establishing a B&B. The house was in dire need of TLC and the project turned into what can best be described as a snowball going down a mountain. It just kept getting bigger and bigger. We learned two facts about renovations very early into the project: 1) It always takes longer than what you expect and 2) It always costs more. As we live in a seasonal area, we planned on opening Memorial Day weekend, but kept pushing back the opening as construction was far from finished. In June a caller inquired if we would be open by Labor Day. “Sure” I said thinking that we would definitely be ready by then. I booked our first reservation. As the summer wore on and Labor Day approached, my wife was less than happy with me for booking this reservation. Working seven days a week from morning to night and with the help of family and friends, we just made it! It was so tight that Thursday morning we were assembling the bed our guests would sleep in when they arrived Friday night. Our guests, a wonderful couple from New Hampshire, turned out to be an innkeeper’s dream. I could not have chosen a nicer couple for our first guests. Just before they left, they gave my wife and I a beautiful compass and said, “We hope this compass helps everyone find their way to Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast.” In the two years that we have been open, this couple has stayed with us five times. Equally complimentary is their referral of two other couples who have stayed with us. This past April when we lost our Sheltie of 11 years, they sent us a sympathy card. Having guests like these leaves little doubt in our mind that we have chosen a great profession. Larry Brown |
